Treat obstructive sleep apnea and snoring with dental splints

Medical Insurance Covers Obstructive Sleep Apnea, but not Snoring

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a medical diagnosis, and the treatment of OSA is covered by medical insurance. However, insurance companies generally do not consider snoring to be a medical problem, and so do not cover the treatment of snoring.

Medical research is beginning to show that snoring is a medical problem, because it is a verymild stage of OSA. If your physician says there is a medical necessity for an oral appliance, you may be able to have an appliance for snoring covered by your insurance plan. This is something you will have to discuss withboth your physician and your insurance company.

We participate in several insurance plans for OSA treatment with dental devices.

If you have Lovelace, Presbyterian, or Cigna medical insurance, you are covered to the maximum benefit allowed by your policy. We take care of all of the paperwork, and get paid directly by your insurance company. You will pay your copay and any deductible required by your plan.

We are working on creating a similar arrangement with Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

For other medical insurers, you must pay us for the service, and be reimbursed by your insurer. If possible we will attempt to become a participating provider in your plan. However, some plans do not pay enough for us to make a fair and reasonable profit. We are unable to participate in those plans.

Medicare is a different story. We are trying to determine what the government will pay us under the new health care plan. As of October 2010, we have not been able to learn what we must in order to decide if we can participate. For now, if you are insured by Medicare, we can only treat you if you pay our usual fee, without government reimbursement.
